Marriage Registration Delhi: the quick answer
Marriage registration in Delhi gives you a government marriage certificate for a wedding that has already happened - whether it was a temple, Arya Samaj, social or family ceremony. It is done under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 (for Hindu weddings) or the Special Marriage Act, 1954, through the Delhi e-District portal and the SDM's office.
Marriage Registration Delhi explained clearly
Marriage registration help for couples who already married socially, in a temple, through Arya Samaj or by family ceremony.
What marriage registration means
Registration is the official record of your marriage with the government. Many couples are already married by a religious or social ceremony but have no legal certificate. Registration converts that ceremony into a recognised document that you can use for a passport, visa, joint bank account, insurance, name change or spouse-related benefits.
Two routes: Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act
If both partners are Hindu and were married by Hindu rites (including an Arya Samaj or temple wedding), registration is usually done under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. This route needs two witnesses and is generally faster.
If the couple did not have a Hindu ceremony, or they belong to different religions, registration is done under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. This route involves a notice period and three witnesses. Choosing the correct route is the first decision, and it depends on the facts of your wedding.
The online process in Delhi
Delhi registration starts on the e-District portal at edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in. You create a user account, choose Registration of Marriage under the available services, fill in the date and place of marriage along with both partners' and witnesses' details, upload the documents, and submit the application.
After submission, the SDM's office verifies the file and gives an appointment date. Both partners and the witnesses attend on that date, and once everything is in order the marriage certificate is issued.
Documents required
- Application form signed by both husband and wife.
- Identity proof for both (voter ID, driving licence, passport or PAN; Aadhaar is accepted but not compulsory).
- Age proof for both partners.
- Address proof.
- Two passport-size photographs of each partner, plus a ceremony/wedding photograph.
- Wedding invitation card, where available.
- Witnesses with their own photo identity proof (two for Hindu Marriage Act, three for Special Marriage Act).
How long it takes
Timelines depend on the route and the office. Registration under the Hindu Marriage Act is generally processed in around 15 days, while the Special Marriage Act route takes longer because of its notice period. After verification, the certificate is usually issued within about two weeks. These are typical ranges, not guarantees, because office schedules vary.
