Arya Samaj Marriage Delhi: the quick answer
An Arya Samaj marriage is a simple Vedic ceremony performed at an Arya Samaj mandir. When the rites are completed correctly between two eligible Hindus, the marriage is valid under Section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. Important point: the Arya Samaj certificate alone is not complete legal proof. To get a government-recognised marriage certificate, the marriage should be registered with the registrar (SDM).

What an Arya Samaj marriage is
An Arya Samaj marriage is a Vedic-rite wedding conducted at an Arya Samaj mandir. It is short, dignified and free of dowry, with the essential ceremonies such as the havan and the saptapadi (seven steps). Couples often choose it because it is simple, affordable and respectful.
A marriage solemnised by these Vedic rites satisfies Section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, which recognises a Hindu marriage performed with customary ceremonies. The Arya Marriage Validation Act, 1937 further protects such marriages between Arya Samajists even when the partners belong to different castes or sub-castes.
Is an Arya Samaj marriage legally valid?
The marriage itself is legally valid if the ceremony is genuine and both partners are eligible. However, recent court decisions have made one thing clear: an Arya Samaj mandir is not a government authority and its certificate by itself is not conclusive legal proof.
For full legal recognition - the kind banks, passport offices and courts accept - the marriage should be registered with the government registrar (the SDM) under the Hindu Marriage Act. Treat the Arya Samaj ceremony as the wedding, and government registration as the step that produces the legally recognised certificate.
Who is eligible
Arya Samaj marriage is meant for couples who come under the Hindu Marriage Act. The basic conditions are the same age and consent rules that apply to any valid Hindu marriage.
- Groom at least 21 years and bride at least 18 years on the date of marriage.
- Both partners are Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist (or have validly converted).
- Both are of sound mind and marrying of their own free will.
- Neither has a living spouse from a subsisting marriage.
Documents for the ceremony
- Age proof for both partners.
- Identity proof (Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, passport or driving licence).
- Address proof.
- Passport-size photographs.
- Two witnesses with photo identity proof.
- Conversion (shuddhi) certificate, only if one partner has converted.
- Divorce decree or death certificate, if either partner was married before.
Registering the marriage afterwards
After the ceremony, the marriage is registered under the Hindu Marriage Act through the Delhi e-District system and the SDM's office. You submit the Arya Samaj marriage proof, photographs and two witnesses. Once verified, the government issues the marriage certificate that serves as proper legal proof. Our marriage registration page explains this step in detail.
How we help
We guide you on the ceremony arrangements, confirm both partners are eligible, prepare the documents, and then help you complete government registration so you finish with a legally recognised certificate - not just a mandir receipt. Our team verifies case-specific requirements with the concerned office so your marriage is properly recorded.
Frequently asked questions
Is an Arya Samaj marriage legal in India?
The marriage is legally valid if the Vedic ceremony is genuine and both partners are eligible under the Hindu Marriage Act. But the Arya Samaj certificate alone is not full proof - you should register the marriage with the government registrar to get a recognised certificate.
Do we still need to register an Arya Samaj marriage?
Yes, registration is strongly advised. Courts have clarified that an Arya Samaj certificate by itself is not conclusive proof. Government registration under the Hindu Marriage Act gives you the certificate that banks, passport offices and visas accept.
Can an inter-caste couple have an Arya Samaj marriage?
Yes. The Arya Marriage Validation Act, 1937 specifically protects marriages between Arya Samajists of different castes or sub-castes.
Can a non-Hindu marry through Arya Samaj?
Arya Samaj marriage is meant for couples who come under the Hindu Marriage Act. If one partner follows another religion, conversion may be required, or the couple may instead choose a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, which needs no conversion.
What is the minimum age for Arya Samaj marriage?
The groom must be at least 21 and the bride at least 18, the same as any valid Hindu marriage.
