Court Marriage Documents: the quick answer
The documents for a marriage in Delhi fall into a few simple groups: age proof, identity proof, address proof, photographs, witness documents, and previous-marriage papers where they apply. Getting these right before you apply is the single biggest factor in avoiding delays.

Why documents decide your timeline
Most marriage cases that get delayed are not delayed because the couple is ineligible - they are delayed because of a document mismatch. A name spelled two different ways, an old photograph, or a missing prior-marriage paper can hold up a certificate. A careful pre-check fixes these problems before they reach the counter.
Age proof
You need proof that the groom is at least 21 and the bride at least 18. Any one of the following usually works:
- Birth certificate.
- Class 10 (matriculation) certificate or marksheet.
- Passport.
- Aadhaar or PAN, where accepted, showing date of birth.
Identity and address proof
- Identity: Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, passport or driving licence.
- Address: voter ID, passport, utility bill, rent agreement or bank passbook.
- For the Special Marriage Act, the address proof also helps establish the 30-day residence in the district.
Photographs
- Recent passport-size photographs of both partners (keep several copies).
- A ceremony or wedding photograph, which registration offices ask for when you register an existing marriage.
Witness documents
Witnesses must carry their own valid photo identity proof. Court marriage and Special Marriage Act registration need three witnesses; Hindu Marriage Act registration needs two. Each witness should be above 18 and of sound mind.
Previous-marriage and conversion papers
- Divorce decree, if a partner is divorced.
- Death certificate of the former spouse, if a partner is widowed.
- Conversion (shuddhi) certificate, only where a partner has converted for an Arya Samaj marriage.
Common document mistakes to avoid
- Name spelled differently across Aadhaar, PAN and certificates.
- Date of birth not matching between documents.
- Address proof that does not support the required residence period.
- Witnesses arriving without original photo ID.
- Forgetting prior-marriage proof when one partner was married before.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most important document for marriage?
Valid age proof and matching identity proof for both partners. If names or dates do not match across documents, the case can be delayed even when the couple is fully eligible.
Is Aadhaar compulsory?
No. Aadhaar is accepted but not mandatory. Voter ID, passport, driving licence or PAN can be used for identity.
How many photographs should we carry?
Carry several passport-size photographs of each partner, and a ceremony or wedding photograph if you are registering a marriage that already took place.
What documents do witnesses need?
Each witness needs an original photo identity document and should be above 18 years and of sound mind.
What if one of us was married before?
You must provide the divorce decree (if divorced) or the former spouse's death certificate (if widowed), because the law requires that neither partner has a subsisting marriage.
