Finding the right office
Delhi has thirteen revenue districts and thirty-nine sub-divisions, and which SDM office handles your marriage depends on where you live - not on which office is nearest or most convenient. That map changed on 1 January 2026: eleven districts became thirteen, three new districts were created, Shahdara stopped being a district, and seven sub-division names disappeared entirely. This index has a page for every current sub-division, grouped by district. Use the search box to find your locality, or open your district below. If your area's old sub-division no longer exists, its page explains where the file goes now - and clause 5 of the Delhi Order 2014 means nobody can be left without an office.

Why the office depends on where you live
Marriage jurisdiction in Delhi is territorial, and the rules are written in terms of districts - which is why the 2026 reorganisation matters to you even though nothing on the ground moved.
For registration of a marriage that has already happened, the Delhi Revenue Department's published rule is residence-based: the applicants apply to the office in whose territorial jurisdiction either of them resides. Where the marriage was solemnised in Delhi but the applicants were not residing in Delhi, the application goes to the office in whose jurisdiction the marriage was solemnised.
For solemnisation under the Special Marriage Act, section 5 sends the notice to the Marriage Officer of the district in which at least one of you has resided for not less than thirty days immediately preceding the notice. So on that route the district is fixed by thirty days of residence, not by preference.
And there is a universal fallback. Clause 5 of the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014 gives the Marriage Officer of the district of solemnisation jurisdiction, and adds that the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Head Quarter), the Additional District Magistrate and the District Magistrate of Delhi have concurrent jurisdiction over the entire National Capital Territory for any marriage solemnised anywhere in Delhi. Whatever confusion exists about a sub-division during the transition, there is always an authority with jurisdiction.
Every page below covers the same ground for its own area: which district it now sits in, which office handles the file, the documents, the witnesses, the fees and the realistic timeline - plus one legal subject in depth that matters particularly there.
What changed on 1 January 2026
The Delhi government notified a reorganisation of the revenue districts on 25 December 2025, effective 1 January 2026. Eleven districts became thirteen and thirty-three sub-divisions became thirty-nine. Three districts were created - Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North - and Shahdara ceased to be a district.
Nothing on the ground moved. Every locality in Delhi is exactly where it was. What changed is the administrative heading above it.
Here is the complete current map. Find your locality's sub-division, read across to the district, and use that district.
| District | Sub-divisions |
|---|---|
| Central | Karol Bagh, Patel Nagar |
| Central North (new) | Model Town, Shakur Basti, Shalimar Bagh |
| East | Gandhi Nagar, Patparganj, Vishwas Nagar |
| New Delhi | New Delhi, Delhi Cantt |
| North | Adarsh Nagar, Badli, Burari |
| North East | Gokalpur, Karawal Nagar, Shahdara, Yamuna Vihar |
| North West | Kirari, Nangloi Jat, Rohini |
| Old Delhi (new) | Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar |
| Outer North (new) | Bawana, Mundka, Narela |
| South | Chhatarpur, Deoli, Malviya Nagar, Mehrauli |
| South East | Badarpur, Jangpura, Kalkaji |
| South West | Bijwasan, Dwarka, Matiala, Najafgarh |
| West | Janakpuri, Rajouri Garden, Vikaspuri |
If your sub-division is not on the new list
Seven names that everyone used last year are not among the thirty-nine created on 1 January 2026: Chanakyapuri, Vasant Vihar, Civil Lines, Kotwali, Alipur, Saraswati Vihar and Kanjhawala.
The places have not gone anywhere. Chanakyapuri is still Chanakyapuri and the lanes of Kotwali are exactly where they were. What has gone is the sub-division heading of that name.
We kept a page for each of those localities, because people still live there and still search for them, and each page explains where a file from that area goes now. You will find them in the directory above.
Your existing certificate is unaffected. A marriage certificate records that a marriage was registered on a date by an officer who held that authority then, and no later reorganisation reaches back and unmakes it. If anybody tells you a certificate must be re-issued or a file "transferred" for a fee because the district changed, that is not a legal position - see the Shahdara page, which deals with this at length.
Four other sub-divisions survived but changed district: Patel Nagar moved from West to Central, Sadar Bazar from Central to Old Delhi, Narela from North to Outer North, and Model Town from North to Central North.
What is on every area page
Each page is written for its own locality rather than templated, and each carries one legal subject in depth so that reading two of them is worth more than reading one twice.
Every page covers: which district the sub-division now sits in and what changed; which office handles your file and the published counter hours; the documents the Delhi Revenue Department actually lists, including the three accepted proofs of date of birth; the witness requirement for each route; the published fees; and the realistic timeline.
Beyond that, each page owns a subject. A few examples: Mehrauli covers age proof and what to do when there is no birth certificate; Bawana covers the notice period and the three-month lapse under section 14; Yamuna Vihar covers prohibited degrees and sapinda relationship; Jangpura covers when you may lawfully remarry after a divorce; Patparganj covers what to do when an office refuses or delays; Kirari covers streedhan and the list of wedding presents the law requires; and Shakur Basti carries the complete 2026 district map as a reference table.
So the page for your own area is the right starting point, and the pages either side of it are worth reading for the subject rather than the locality.
If you cannot find your locality
Delhi has thousands of colony names and thirty-nine sub-divisions, so your colony will not have its own page - it sits inside one of the thirty-nine.
Try the search box with the nearest well-known area name, or open the district you believe you are in and scan its sub-divisions. Most colony names map obviously once you see the list.
If you are still not sure, it is not a problem worth agonising over. Send us your locality on WhatsApp and we will tell you which sub-division and district you fall in - it takes a minute and costs nothing. And remember clause 5: the SDM (Head Quarter), the Additional District Magistrate and the District Magistrate hold concurrent jurisdiction across the whole of Delhi, so a marriage solemnised anywhere in the NCT always has an office competent to register it.
If you live outside Delhi in the NCR, we have separate pages for Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Faridabad - and note that a marriage solemnised inside Delhi is covered by the Delhi Order whatever your residence.
Frequently asked questions
How many districts and sub-divisions does Delhi have?
Thirteen districts and thirty-nine sub-divisions, since the reorganisation notified on 25 December 2025 and effective 1 January 2026. Before that there were eleven districts and thirty-three sub-divisions.
Which districts were created in 2026?
Three: Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North. Shahdara ceased to be a district and the name now belongs to a sub-division of North East.
Which sub-division names no longer exist?
Seven: Chanakyapuri, Vasant Vihar, Civil Lines, Kotwali, Alipur, Saraswati Vihar and Kanjhawala. The localities still exist; the sub-division headings of those names are not among the thirty-nine.
Which sub-divisions changed district?
Patel Nagar moved from West to Central, Sadar Bazar from Central to Old Delhi, Narela from North to Outer North, and Model Town from North to Central North.
How do I know which SDM office is mine?
By where you live. The Delhi Revenue Department's rule for registration is that applicants apply to the office in whose territorial jurisdiction either of them resides. Find your locality in the directory above and open its page.
We married in Delhi but live outside Delhi. Where do we apply?
To the office in whose jurisdiction the marriage was solemnised, per the Revenue Department's guidance, and clause 5 of the Delhi Order gives the SDM (Head Quarter), the ADM and the DM concurrent jurisdiction over the whole NCT for any marriage solemnised in Delhi.
Is my marriage certificate still valid after the reorganisation?
Yes, without qualification. A certificate records that a marriage was registered on a date by an officer who held that authority then, and no later administrative reorganisation unmakes it.
Do we have to re-register because our district changed?
No. Nothing in the reorganisation requires any resident to do anything. If somebody says a certificate must be re-issued or a file transferred for a fee, that is not a legal position.
What if the office is unfamiliar with a new district name?
It is possible during a transition year, since directories and forms take time to catch up. Treat one redirection as a transition rather than obstruction, and if a requirement is imposed that rests on nothing, ask for it in writing.
My colony is not listed. What do I do?
Your colony sits inside one of the thirty-nine sub-divisions - Delhi has thousands of colony names. Search for the nearest well-known area, or send us your locality on WhatsApp and we will tell you which sub-division and district you fall in.
Can we choose a more convenient SDM office?
Jurisdiction is territorial rather than a matter of preference. For registration it follows residence; for solemnisation under the Special Marriage Act, section 5 fixes it by thirty days of residence in the district.
Does the Special Marriage Act have a residence requirement?
Yes - at least one party must have resided in the district for not less than thirty days immediately preceding the notice, and those thirty days sit before you file. The Delhi Revenue Department asks for documentary evidence of that stay.
Does registration have a residence requirement?
The Delhi Order imposes no residence condition on the parties. Its clause 1(b) extends it to all marriages solemnised in Delhi irrespective of caste, creed and religion, and clause 5 fixes jurisdiction.
What are the office timings?
9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. on any working day, at the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate in whose jurisdiction either the husband or the wife resides, as published by the Delhi Revenue Department.
What documents does every office ask for?
Age proof from a short list - matriculation certificate, passport or birth certificate, with Aadhaar not on it - plus residence proof from voter I-card, ration card, driving licence or passport, affidavits, photographs, and witnesses with their own documents.
How many witnesses do we need?
Three for solemnisation under section 11 of the Special Marriage Act. Two for registration under clause 4(d) of the Delhi Order, who attended the ceremony and hold proof of permanent residence in Delhi.
Are the fees different in different districts?
No. The published figures are the same across Delhi - Rs 15 for Special Marriage Act solemnisation and Rs 100 for Hindu Marriage Act registration per the Revenue Department, and Rs 200 under clause 4 of the Delhi Order.
Do these pages cover Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Faridabad?
Those have their own pages, linked from the directory. Note also that a marriage solemnised inside Delhi is covered by the Delhi Order whatever the parties' residence.
Why does each area page cover a different legal subject?
So that the pages are worth reading rather than being the same text with the locality swapped. Each carries one subject in depth - age proof, prohibited degrees, remarriage timing, objections, the notice period, streedhan and so on - alongside the same practical information about its own office.
Where is the full district map?
On the Shakur Basti page, which publishes all thirteen districts and thirty-nine sub-divisions as a reference table, and in the table on this page.
